Homeless, hunted, and desperate to escape a bitter storm, Keira takes refuge in an abandoned groundskeeper's cottage. Her new home is tucked away at the edge of a cemetery, surrounded on all sides by gravestones: some recent, some hundreds of years old, all suffering from neglect.
And in the darkness, she can hear the unquiet dead whispering.
The cemetery is alive with faint, spectral shapes, led by a woman who died before her time... and Keira, the only person who can see her, has become her new target. Determined to help put the ghost to rest, Keira digs into the spirit's past life with the help of unlikely new friends, and discovers a history of deception, ill-fated love, and murder.
But the past is not as simple as it seems, and Keira's time is running out. Tangled in a dangerous web, she has to find a way to free the spirit... even if it means offering her own life in return.
I think it’s important to point out that this is the start of a series. If you don’t know this going into this, you’ll probably be severely frustrated by the end of this book. That’s because while the plot of this book’s premise wraps up, we still have several unanswered questions revolving our main character.
I’ll admit, I was frustrated by this and I knew it was a series going into it. This had captivated me instantly as we find our main character, Keira in a graveyard at night with no memory, injured and with the feeling she’s being hunted. The owner of the graveyard offers her sanctuary in the empty groundskeeper cottage while she heals. While staying there, Keira discovers she can hear and see the dead. And one spirit in particular is calling for her help.
As I said, the book’s main focus around this spirit that seems attracted to Kiera’s attention, this gets resolved. And I do find this plot to be a relatively interesting ghost story. This take on mediums and Kiera’s abilities were truly captivating. I found this book to be entertaining and I do want to read the rest of the series.
However when it comes to our main character, Kiera, I feel like I know as much about her as she does herself. Which isn’t much, considering she woke up with no memory. I do wish we got to know her story a little more, to learn more about her past in this one and what’s happened to her. As well as, we completely move on from the fact that she was being hunted at the very beginning of the book and her hunter never seems to reappear again? I have so many questions.
Because of that, I found this to be a cruel way to make us want to read the sequel. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely want to read the next one. Both for Keira’s past and more ghosts. I just find it only slightly frustrating especially after reading some of the author’s other books, we don’t usually have any lingering questions like we do in this one.
If you enjoy book series focused around paranormal horrors and ghosts, then definitely consider picking this one up!
