This book was everything I didn’t know I needed. I absolutely adored this book in its entirety.
Rating: 5/5
Raised by conservative parents, 18-year-old Meg Hennessey just found out her entire childhood was a lie. Instead of taking a gap year before college to find herself, she ends up traveling north to meet what’s left of the family she never knew existed.
While there, she meets Micah Allen, a former pastor’s kid whose dad ended up in prison, leaving Micah with his own complicated relationship about the church. The clock is ticking on Pastor Allen’s probation hearing and Micah, now 19, feels the pressure to forgive - even when he can’t possibly forget.
As Meg and Micah grow closer, they are confronted with the heavy flutterings of first love and all the complications it brings. Together, they must navigate the sometimes-painful process of cutting ties with childhood beliefs as they build toward something truer and straight from the heart.
I received an ARC of Never Saw You Coming through Wednesday Books. Thank you so much! I really enjoyed this one!
This book was everything I didn’t know I needed. I absolutely adored this book in its entirety. From beginning to end, I was completely entranced. When I wasn’t reading, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. This was the perfect summer read! There’s so much I want to say about this one, but with this being an ARC I won’t say too much otherwise I’ll spoil it for everyone! But I loved it!

Now I will say, I can definitely see this will not be a book for everyone. Only because of the amount of religion and faith involved. I wouldn’t say this focuses heavily on religion, but it’s definitely there. From the premise, I was a bit wary too. But I was interested in it enough to want to give it shot. It was mostly because with one of the main characters, Meg being raised by conservative parents and our other main character, Micah being a pastor’s kid, I wasn’t sure what level of faith would be involved. I was worried it might make me a bit uncomfortable. However, I found it to be such a well-written story. We get to see both of our main characters question and even push back on their faith and the traditional beliefs around it. It fell exactly in line with how I personally feel about my faith. And I loved how the story ended in regards to their faith.
And while yes, there is religion involved, I wouldn’t say our story completely revolves around it. It was a key component and it helped create the tension moving the story along at some points, but the story was so much more than that. I found it to be more focused on being a coming-of-age story for both our main characters. I loved following them both, Meg and Micah as they try to find themselves, growing into more confident people and supporting each other with the difficulties they face.

Oh, and their love story! It was so damn cute! It gave me butterflies just reading it. I truly got all the feels with this one! From the moment I saw them meet, I was shipping them. I thought they were perfect for each other. There were scenes that I was grinning like an idiot seeing them interact with each other. And I found some of Meg’s reactions absolutely priceless, I was definitely laughing and giggling a lot.
I truly got all the feels with this one!
And, for once, I couldn’t predict what was going to happen. Normally with these young adult romances, I can easily predict what might happen throughout. This one I didn’t, and I’m not mad about it! I’m so happy it caught me off guard.
I found the pacing of this to be great as well. It managed to completely suck me in and cause me to lose track of time. I simply did not want to stop reading it. It was such a cute story!
Overall, I think this is an amazing young adult contemporary love story. I truly loved everything this book had from the love story to the character growth and even the religion involved. I highly recommend picking this up if you enjoy a cute YA Contemporary Romance. This one is perfect! But as I mentioned, I don’t think it’ll be everyone’s cup of tea. Only because of the religion. I also think depending on what you believe, it could affect how you feel about the faith involved in this one. I’d say as long as you’re open to reading YA Contemporary Romance involving faith then you might enjoy this one!
